Presidential Hopefuls and their Marketing

I have signed up for email updates from several candidates who are running the primaries for president next year just out of curiosity in how they market to voters and how they use the internet in their campaigns. I will go into further detail in coming posts, but it is interesting that they all have similar sites and similar email campaigns. This seems to be the outline of their goals:

Site Goals:

1. Get your information registered.

2. Get you to donate money to campaigns.

3. Get you to volunteer or host events locally that raise money for candidate.

4. Sell you stuff that has their name on it.

5. Feature Social Networking “coolness” factor content. Links to meetups, youtube videos, myspace pages, and ways you can contribute messages or comments to the candidates and their site.

Goals of Emails:

1. Solicit Donations, especially if you haven’t donated the full amount allowed.

2. Keep message active and candidate fresh in your mind.

3. Get you to volunteer or host events locally that raise money for candidate.

This is all pretty interesting considering that a few elections ago candidates didn’t have web sites at all. I am curious as to how much of a factor these online efforts will be in winning the primary and later the presidential election.
